Raw Materials Used in Ink

Raw Materials for Ink

Ink is made from a mix of ingredients that help it give color, stick well, dry properly, and last long. These include pigments or dyes, resins, solvents, and additives.

1. Pigments and Dyes

  • Pigments: Tiny solid particles that give color. Like carbon black for black ink.
  • Dyes: Colorants that dissolve in ink, used where transparency is needed.

2. Resins (Binders)

  • Help ink stick to surfaces like paper or fabric.
  • Common types: Acrylic, Polyester, Alkyd resins.

3. Solvents (Vehicle)

  • Liquids that carry the ink and help it flow.
  • Types: Water, Alcohol, Mineral oils depending on ink type.

4. Additives

  • Improve ink performance and durability.
  • Includes waxes, UV blockers, defoamers, surfactants.

Examples of Ink Types:

  • Ball Pen Ink: Dye, resin (rosin), solvent (kerosene).
  • UV Ink: Acrylate monomers, photoinitiators.
  • Water-Based Ink: Water, pigment, binder, defoamer.
  • Textile Ink: Pigments + binders for fabric printing.
